The Scoop on Sunday

This week the sermon focuses on another key passage in Mark's gospel, chapter 10. Here Jesus teaches from several angles on the difficult subject of humility. What is it? How is it cultivated? How does it express itself? Why does in matter? Why is it essential to life in the kingdom? What impact does it have on the decisions we make about how to live?

Dave Silvey will be leading our musical worship, along with the Saints, the newest vocal ensemble from APU. We appreciate this opportunity to be lead in worship by such a special group. You won’t want to miss it.

We hope you will be there to share in this very special morning of worship.

Family Memory Verse

Our Children’s Ministries is focusing on one verse or passage per month, and is encouraging the whole family to learn it.  This is meant for the families of our children, but how wonderful would it be to know that our whole Church body was learning God’s Word!

February’s Children’s Ministries Family memory verse is Matthew 11:28 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

What's Happening at Bethany
BOY SCOUT SUNDAY
The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday before February 8, Scouting Anniversary Day, as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. This Sunday, February 5, is Scout Sunday this year. Boy, Girl, Cub and Brownie Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniform to worship. As a congregation, let’s encourage anyone we see wearing their uniform.

NEW MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY – ASL WORSHIP MINISTRY
Sheri Smith is one of the facilitators of a new Bethany Church ASL (American Sign Language) Worship Ministry. The class will meet every 1st & 3rd Sundays in the BCS Teacher’s Lounge, up the outside stairs at the rear of the Sanctuary. It is accessed from the Children’s Patio. (Look for the arrow sign!) All are welcome to attend, whether you're a fluent expert in ASL, are brand new to this, or anywhere in between. We will be using an immersion model, helping one another, and having fun while using this language modality to serve the Deaf community in worshipping our Lord. Indeed, God is birthing this ASL ministry for His glory! We look forward to field trips to local ASL congregations and ASL ministries to the deaf, where we can grow and learn re: 2nd Peter 3:18. Questions? Contact Sheri at 626-808-5335 or by email at agapeatcha@gmail.com.

APU SCHOOL OF MUSIC GROUP – THE SAINTS
Make sure you join us this Sunday, February 5. We are having a musical group from APU, the Saints, join us in worship at both services. With more than 25 years of small group music ministry history, APU’s School of Music is proud to present its newest vocal ensemble, The Saints. This select group of talented young people, under the direction of faculty member Al Clifft, is made up of students who desire to serve the Lord and share the Gospel message through music and personal testimony.
This unique ensemble represents a diverse spectrum of students, majoring in many different areas of study, all desiring to praise God and lead their fellow brothers and sisters in worship. The Saints most recently completed a major musical tour through the Pacific Northwest, covering more than 2,500 miles and ministering in churches, schools, and civic organizations. The Saints perform a wide variety of music ranging from great arrangements of classic hymns to contemporary choruses, and from a cappella spirituals to the great gospel music favorites. They perform regularly for local community events in the San Gabriel Valley and they minister on a bi-weekly basis in the greater Southern California region.

TIME WITH JESUS
Anita Lewis will start another of her “Time With Jesus” classes for women on Monday, February 6. This is a 12-week class on how to deepen your relationship with Jesus, and how to get the most out of the time you spend seeking Him. The class meets at her home. Class size is limited, so please sign up now! You can contact Anita at 626-355-6294, or by email at dnalewis626@verizon.net.

IRONMEN’S BREAKFAST +
Men of all ages - High School through “mature” - are invited to attend our monthly Ironmen’s Breakfast Plus on Saturday, February 11 at 8 am in the Ministry Center Dining Room.  A light breakfast will be served, followed by an outing to the Sam Maloof Woodworking Studio and Gardens in Alta Loma. There is a small entrance fee. Good food, good fellowship.  Sign up in the Lobby or in your ABF class.

IRONMEN’S NIGHT OUT BBQ & MOVIE
Men, set aside Friday, February 24, for a Movie and BBQ night. It all starts with dinner in the Ministry Center Dining Room at 6:45. The movie will follow in gym. Don’t miss out on this opportunity. Invite neighbors, co-workers, and friends to join us for a great time of fellowship and fun. Presale tickets are $8. Tickets at the door are $10. Sign up in the Lobby or call/email the Church Office. We will be showing the movie “Courageous.” “Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller are confident and focused. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they're quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God ... and to their children?”

Missions Updates

Missionary of the Week
Bob & Maria Hill
Greek Bible College - Athens, Greece
We were in Thessalonica for Christmas and to welcome our tenth grandchild, Aria Noel Hill - Timothy’s third daughter. She was born Dec. 16. Maria was there for the birth. In Thessalonica, we visited a couple of churches, one pastored by a graduate of the Greek Bible Institute, and the other led by one of the school’s board members.  It was good to see those who have passed through the school and are now serving the Lord.
January 9-13 I was in Israel with Walk Thru the Bible at one of their trainers’ conferences.  Then I came back to a full schedule of classes at the college.  Again in February I’ll be off on another trip - this one to England for the 25th conference on Christian Conjuring in Europe.  It is gratifying to see this movement off and running so well, and people impacting another generation with the Gospel.
January has been a busy time as we are nailing down many aspects of the thrift store.  We hope to open in February.  We are so glad that you are praying for us!

Ways You Can Serve

Our food pantry needs filling!  The Bethany Kids Care Team is opening our food pantry to the community. We are accepting both non-perishable and perishable foods. Please support our efforts in reaching out to the less-fortunate in our community. Drop off items in the boxes supplied on Sunday in the foyer or in the church office during the week. This is a new project for our Children’s Ministries. Please pray that it is successful in ministering to our community, and also to our kids who are participating in this outreach.

WORSHIP MINISTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP! If you are willing to serve as a Media Shout operator on Sunday mornings once a month, please contact Suzanne in the Church Office (626-355-1403, ext. 1607), or email her at suzanne@bethanyfamily.com. It is a simple program to learn, but vital to our worship experience on Sunday morning!

The Salvation Army has installed a small items collection box in the back parking lot by the Montecito entrance.  If you have items you no longer need, feel free to drop them off at any time.

The Tape Ministry needs someone to help out after 2nd Service, selling tapes and cd’s.  If you are willing to stay after church for 15 minutes, please contact Suzanne in the Church Office, or at 355-1403, ext. 1607.

REMINDER!! Recyclable aluminum cans and water bottles can be dropped in recycling containers at the southwest corner of the Ministry Center that are marked for Missionary Fellowship. These funds are helpful in sending cards and gifts to our missionaries’ children.

If you are not a member of an ABF class, but would still like to help out with our Living Room Café on Sunday mornings, please contact the church office.

We believe that serving others is at the core of what we do here at Bethany. We have a master list of all the service opportunities in the church.  Or check out the Website - www.bethanyfamily.com - "How to Get Connected / Volunteer Center."
